St. Joseph’s Day Celebrations
We all had a wonderful day yesterday celebrating St. Joseph! The day began with a lovely celebration Mass in church where we were joined by the parishioners of St. Joseph’s Parish and family members of our pupils. Our Year 5 and 6 children read beautifully at the Mass and the whole school did us proud with their impeccable behaviour and prayerful conduct.
On our return to school an art competition awaited! Each child in school was asked to draw a picture of St. Joseph and informed that the winning ‘St Joseph’ would feature on our new school signs. Every child in school worked hard and the images of St. Joseph they produced were stunning!
Teachers then had a very tough staff meeting looking through all of the beautiful pictures and trying to pick out a winning design for our schools signs. They were finally able to narrow it down to the 14 images of St. Joseph included below but have asked for more thinking time to decide on the overall winner. The announcement will be made on Friday morning during assembly and will be shared here shortly after that.

Mission Week – Unbroken
Mission week took place from 27th November 2017 – 3rd December 2017 and began with a Whole School Liturgy. Taylor, who designed our Mission Logo, lit our Mission Candle which burnt all week. We also had Prayer Stations, KS1 Liturgy and KS2 Living Rosary which were open to parent/carers and the parish. The school week ended with a Whole School Mass with pupils from St Mary’s and the Mission candle was passed back to St Joseph’s Parish on Sunday at 11am Mass so that the parish mission week could begin.
The children and members of our Pontop Partnership visited our Prayer Stations. These were accessed by children and families throughout the week.

Michael Heaviside’s Homecoming Parade
July saw the 100th anniversary of war hero, Michael Heaviside’s homecoming parade. The people of Craghead and Stanley lined the streets to welcome their local hero. Using the film of the parade which survives in the archives of the Imperial War Museum, we walked alongside other local schools and organisations to recreate part of the homecoming parade on Stanley Front Street.

The International School Award is a badge of honour for schools that do outstanding work in international education, such as through links with partner schools overseas. Fostering an international dimension in the curriculum is at the heart of the British Council’s work with schools, so that young people gain the cultural understanding and skills they need to live and work as global citizens.
