Every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfil their potential. Children develop quickly in the early years and a child’s experiences between birth and age five have a major impact on their future life chances.

Reception and the Community
In Reception class we love to be involved with the wider community! We enjoy regular visits to Stanley Library, St. Joseph’s Church and the local shops. The local community are very supportive of our school and we appreciate their help! Recently we even had a visit from our Sri Lankan friends.

Letters and Sounds
Most nights the children will bring home a ‘sound sheet’ related to our ‘Letters and Sounds’ lesson from that day. We would be very grateful if you could support, praise and encourage your child as they produce the phoneme (sound), show you the associated action and share with you the name/s of the letter/s used to represent this phoneme. They can then colour the picture on the sheet and practise forming the letter/s. You may find the ‘letter families’ and ‘letter formation script’ found in the useful documents section helpful when supporting your child with this homework.
As appropriate we will send home worksheets and suggested activities related to the mathematics learning taking place in class. However, just as we do at school, it is best to support your child’s development in mathematics through play and practical activities. Board games, cooking, family walks etc. all lend themselves very well to developing a sound mathematical knowledge while having lots of fun! Count anything and everything, point out and chat about shapes and patterns-the possibilities are endless!

These activities are optional and do not have to be submitted at any particular time, or completed in any particular order. However, we know your children will be proud of their achievements and there will be opportunities for them to show them off to their peers in class and at assembly time.
